Dr. Jian Han

Founder, Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Scientific Officer

Dr. Jian Han is the founder of iCubate.  Currently, he serves as Chairman of the Board and as the Corporation’s President and Chief Scientific Officer.  Dr. Han obtained his M.D. from Suzhou Medical College in China and his Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).  He became an Assistant Professor at UAB in 1994 and served as Clinical Molecular Laboratory Director.  He is a board-certified clinical molecular geneticist.  In 1996, he started a biotech company, Genaco Biomedical Products, Inc., to develop molecular diagnostic products on the Luminex xMAP platform.  Genaco developed a multiplex molecular assay for profiling pathogens associated with respiratory infections.  With this development, Genaco made infectious disease diagnostics its focus. After a series of successful development and validation studies, Genaco’s core technology, tem-PCR on the Luminex platform gained market recognition and ultimately won the Frost & Sullivan Technology Innovation and Leadership award and Wall Street Journal Technology Innovation award.  In 2006, Qiagen acquired Genaco. Following the sale of Qiagen, Dr. Han joined the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology and became the first Faculty Investigator.  At HudsonAlpha, he developed the next generation multiplex PCR technology, the arm-PCR method.  He retained many of the talented employees from Genaco and recruited exceptional engineers to develop the iCubate instrument platform.


Carter Wells

Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Carter Wells is iCubate’s Chief Executive Officer. Joining iCubate in 2010, Mr. Wells provides the overall leadership to the dedicated team and strategic vision to promote the growth of the company.

As the CEO, Mr. Wells maintains strong relationships with iCubate’s board of directors and shareholder group. Mr. Wells provides the operational direction to the talented group of biologists, engineers, quality specialists, chemists along with the internal and external financial groups. Mr. Wells manages the company’s marketing and communications efforts to most effectively promote the company. He is responsible for identifying and developing leads for revenue and building relationships for strategic partnerships.

Mr. Wells graduated in 1993 from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science. From 1994-1997 and from 2001-2009, he worked for Representative Robert E. “Bud” Cramer. From 2002 until Rep. Cramer’s retirement, Mr. Wells served as the Congressman’s Chief of Staff.

In 2009, Mr. Wells joined the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology and now holds the position of Vice President of Economic Development. He is responsible for establishing an environment conducive for a biotech economy, working with HudsonAlpha’s resident associate companies to promote their growth and attracting new and existing biotech companies.

Mr. Wells is the Chair of BioAlabama, a statewide organization representing Alabama’s bio-related industries, research institutes and academia all working together to foster, develop and support the life sciences in Alabama. Carter also serves on the boards of the Business Council of Alabama and the startup incubator BizTech.
